Sobre Mí

This week's Friday Fungi is the jelly or wood ear fungus. It may be found mostly on lifeless elder bushes and grows across Canada, , Europe, North Canada, Asia and Canada. This wobbly, gelatinous fungus has a velvety outer layer which feels smooth to the touch. It's apparent how it come upon its identify as is likeness to a human ear is a little spooky. Jelly ear fungus is protected to touch and is eaten in China where it is added to hot and sour soups. Here's a video of some Jelly Ear growing close to the White Cart. Jelly ear is a bracket fungus which suggests it grows out of a tree trunk or department like a bracket. It belongs to a group of fungus called 'decomposers' or 'saprotrophs'. These fungi can't photosynthesize like timber. Plants do to get meals which means they need to find meals elsewhere. They feed from the organisms they dwell on, the lifeless Elder tree. Decomposers ultimately convert all organic matter (dead wood) into carbon dioxide and nutrients. Using potent enzymes the jelly ear breaks down the wood (lignin) and recycles it, depositing nutrients into the soil. This releases raw nutrients (corresponding to nitrogen, phosphorus, and magnesium) in a type usable to plants and algae. Fungi additionally use the nutrients for their own development and repair. This process resupplies nutrients to the ecosystem. How superb is the jelly ear?
